The Office of Community Engagement (OCE) at UMB acts as a connection between the university and the communities in Maryland. We focus on collaborating with schools, organizations, nonprofits, and businesses near the UMB campus in West Baltimore. OCE assists the university’s professional schools in engaging with the community and coordinates volunteer and service-learning projects based on the needs of the community.

The Community Engagement Center (CEC) is a central location for these initiatives and offers a variety of programs and services for people of all ages. The CEC has recently been renovated to better serve the community. In partnership with the Mayors Office of Employment Development, UMB operates the YouthWorks program, providing summer employment opportunities for high school students on campus. This includes the HireOne program, which offers administrative roles for students to gain workplace experience, and the Summer Bioscience Internship Program, which places students interested in healthcare careers with faculty in clinical or research settings to learn about healthcare professions.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) has several programs and partnerships aimed at benefiting the West Baltimore community. The UMB Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) is a mentoring program for students from second to eighth grade. It is a collaboration between the UMB Police Department and the Office of Community Engagement’s Community Engagement Center.

UMB also works with the University of Maryland Medical Center to support K-12 schools and community organizations in West Baltimore. Recent projects include a Back to School Community Fair, school supply collection, and a Thanksgiving meal drive. They also provide volunteers for various events upon request.

The Southwest Partnership is a local nonprofit consisting of seven neighborhoods and six anchor institutions in Baltimore. UMB actively supports their work and has a seat on their Board of Directors.

The Office of Community Engagement (OCE) coordinates volunteers from the UMB campus to assist partner schools and community organizations. These opportunities are posted on the OCE website for faculty, staff, and students interested in getting involved.

In addition, OCE works with the UMB Council for the Arts and Culture to commission public mural projects in West Baltimore schools. We have completed murals at Southwest Baltimore Charter School and James McHenry Elementary/Middle School. OCE also helps promote arts and culture events sponsored by the Council in the community.
